The lack of suitable affordable housing, coupled with low incomes is affecting the sustainability of rural communities. This line-up of speakers, experts in their field, will provide you with an insight into the key issues connected to the delivery of affordable homes.
AFFORDABLE HOMES & SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITIES WORKSHOP
 was held on Monday 20th of July 2009,  at the Royal Welsh Show .
 The acquisition, stewardship and management of assets, particularly of land and buildings, are increasingly seen as a key to the development of communities that wish to be more sustainable in an uncertain future. The workshop were as follows:
  • Focus on the Community Land Trust (CLT) as a vehicle for the ownership of land and other assets
  • Present examples of how this is being done
  • Provide ideas, information and a network of contacts
  • Give some resources and ideas to be taken away and to hopefully inspire you and other people where you live.
  The presentations were;
  • Affordable new homes. Land for People will be reporting on the progress it is making with two of its pilot affordable housing projects, including sourcing of land, community involvement, planning, construction and finance.

  • Derelict buildings. Adfer Ban a Chwm is rescuing and caring for abandoned structures in rural Wales, as part of a response to the need for affordable homes

  • A Community Bond issue. Near Cirencester this approach is being used to raise the money to buy and renovate a disused watermill and ex holiday cottages to provide a resource for the village of Bibury
    • Local food growing and a community’s open space. The Knucklas Castle CLT has bought an ancient castle mound and the fields below it., for food, community and fun

    • Rural enterprise. Calon Cymru’s vision is for a sequence of CLT’s all along the Heart of Wales railway line, to provide homes, jobs, food and much more.

    • A community owned small holding. Ashfield Community Enterprise is working to buy a smallholding in Llandrindod Wells for wide range of benefits to its community.

Opening the door to affordable housing

 Thursday 7th of May 2009 Shrewsbury

 This conference brings together practitioners from across the construction industry, lenders, the community sector, and housing providers who are all actively working with us and our Community Land Trust projects to deliver affordable homes.  Community ownership of land held in trust provides a way of providing homes and premises for local enterprises and community premises not at the mercy of the market.  They provide an asset base from which to grow more resilient communities and can stimulate the supply of land at affordable prices. As we get closer to the next general election policy makers, political parties and lenders are taking a keen interest in Community Land Trusts.  Now is the time for you to find out what Community Land Trusts are all about.
